The Witcher – if you haven’t already seen the trailers – is Netflix’s latest fantasy show. If you’ve been bewitched by the show’s magic then you’ll already know how amazing it is, if not then here are some reasons why you need to binge watch it right now…
1. It’s a TV adaptation. The greatest films and shows are always based on a book, The Witcher is no different. Polish writer, Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel has not only been adapted by Netflix, but there are comics, a movie, a board game and (most successfully, apparently even more so than the novel) a video game trilogy.
2. It’ll fill the void Game of Thrones left.
3. Magic and monsters. And who doesn’t love that!
4. Strong female characters. Two of the three leads in the show are women, we follow the story of Yennefer of Vengerberg and Ciri, Princess of Cintra at different points in time before their timeline begins to merge with Geralt of Rivia.
5. It’s in Netflix’s three most watched TV shows of 2019. No guesses as to why because creator of the show, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, has written and produced for shows such as Marvel’s The Defender’s and The Umbrella Academy (also in the top three shows).
6. Geralt of Rivia. No Jon Snow in The Witcher but true to Netflix’s prediction, audiences love Henry Cavill just as much.
7. Jaskier the bard. He’s great, you’ll fall in love with the love-hate relationship between him and Geralt. Oh and if you’re wondering (which I’m guessing you are) a bard is “a profession which entails writing, singing songs, and creating and telling tales of legend, stories of their personal experiences, and of their own imaginations” according to Witcher Wiki.
8. Forget about uni deadlines for an hour and immerse yourself into a new world.
9. Season two is confirmed. Set to be on Netflix in 2021, season two was greenlit five weeks before the release of the first; if that’s not a sign you should be watching then I don’t know what is.
Season one is on Netflix now, so get on the bandwagon early!
